Spencer Hall is named after Velva Lu Spencer who earned both a bachelor's degree in 1986 and a master's degree in 1989 in sociology. An enrolled member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, she is remembered as an advocate for human rights and for her deep concern for opportunities in higher education for Native American students. From 1988-2003, Spencer served as SDSU's third Native American adviser with remarkable success in retention and graduation of Native American students.
